On Friday, January 13, B.E. 2560 (2017), Assoc. Prof. Winai Dahlan, founding director of The Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University, accompanied by its Board of Directors and staff, travelled to Nakorn Sri Thammarat to distribute survival kits to the local people dwelling at Ban Bang Nok Wak, a severely flooded area located in Suanluang sub-district, Chaloemphrakiat district, Nakorn Sri Thammarat.
“Several Islamic organizations, as well as many Provincial Islamic Committees, have been fundraising capital and goods, and distributing them to the flood victims. I remark a ceaseless tiding of help from everywhere coming to the South. I have to admire generosity of Thai people in general; we have never abandoned all 10 flooded provinces in the South. It is getting more difficult to visit the region since many routes have been ruined; the best way to reach the flooded areas is to journey via highways from the lower part of the South to the upper one.
Hence, on Friday, January 13, B.E. 2560 (2017), the staff of the HSC, Pattani office had to cooperate with students from schools in Pattani to pack 500 survival kits and distribute them to the flood victims in Nakorn Sri Thammarat. All items in the bags are funded by the HSC staff and the capital of the center itself. It is likely that the staff from Bangkok office, including me, will fly to Hat Yai and travel by bus to Nakorn Sri Thammarat. We will also bring more survival kits to our Southern Base. Our staff still remain positive despite their families, living in the flooded areas, are severely affected from this circumstance. Currently there are many Muslim voluntary groups spreading aid to Buddhist flood victims who live in Nakorn Sri Thammarat, Suratthani, and Phattalung. Up until now, help has been given regardless of political preference, ethnicities and religion.” said Mr. Dahlan.
